Active Shooter Preparedness

What is an Active Shooter?

According to the U.S. Department of Justice and the Department of Homeland Security, an active shooter is defined as an individual who is actively engaged in killing or attempting to kill people.

In most cases, active shooters use a firearm(s) and display no pattern or method for the selection of their victims. In some cases, active shooters use other weapons and improvised explosive devices to cause additional victims and act as an impediment to police and emergency responders.

The majority of active shooter incidents’ take place at businesses, but they can occur at any site at any time.

How to Stay Safe?

The best way to stay safe during an active shooter situation is to have a plan. There needs to be a response plan set in place, and it needs to be trained on a continual basis.

This training will help with the muscle memory and gross motor skills needed for a situation where you are presented with an active shooter. The training will help clear any doubt and answer questions that anyone in the school may have.

Everyone involved plays a role, and it is critical to know what that role is. Execution is one of the main reasons why many attacks are minimized and/or thwarted all together which is why it is crucial.
